MY ADVICE / HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SPRAY TAN

Now I know this may seem like a lot of rules, but it really will get you the best result.

Apply sunscreen daily as spray tans do not contain SPF

  • LETS TALK ABOUT WAX BABY! AND /OR LASER, SHAVING and BASICALLY HAIR
Waxing & anything laser is best done a minimum of 48 hours prior to ensure all residue is off the skin. Although the DHA of tans is very superficial DO NOT get laser straight after tanning. If you have just waxed something like your eyebrows, please let me know and we can put barrier cream on them. Believe me, I learnt that the hard way, ON MYSELF. Shaving is best done 6-24 hours prior to your appointment to allow pores to settle and reduce the chance of 'black dots' forming. No, I won't send you packing if you've just shaved, but it really does mean you get the best result.
  • BODY PREP
Come prepared!!! A Bombshell Tan is a partnership. Exfoliating is best done a few hours prior or the night before to allow pores to settle before your appointment. There is no need to get out high grade sandpaper, we just want to remove the superficial dead skin cells. If you have old tan on, please see below on the next tab for tips on removing it. Please arrive with clean skin free from deodorant, makeup, moisturiser or perfume. If you are showering immediately prior, don't have a steaming hot shower because again we want the pores to settle. Do not use any body washes or lotions that contain fragrances or mineral oils as this can affect the result. If you intend to get a spa pedicure or manicure definitely do it prior to the appointment because as great as you feel with gorgeous looking toes and fingernails, a spa pedicure will attempt to take your tan off. Personally, I can only have my toes done because I work in a hospital, so no fingernails for me. I also have tradie hands anyway, so there's not much salvation!
  • REMOVING OLD SPRAY TAN
Now I can't say it's the highlight of my day to remove old tan but there are a few things that can make life easier. Microfibre Cloths / Exfoliating Mits / Shower or Bath Investing in a either a microfibre tan removal mitt or I even use a good quality microfibre cleaning cloth. Think of it as an Enjo cloth, but for your body, not the kitchen sink! Jump in a bath if you have one and use a moisturising body wash or baby oil and soak, exfoliate and shave. Also, after you've showered or bathed, a really great way is to get an old towel or dry microfibre cloth and because your skin is still warm, you'll be able to get even more tan off. What Grandma would suggest / natural and old school remedies Well to be honest, Grandma may still have been laying on the beach lathered in coconut oil trying to get a "natural" tan. Trust me, it is NOT worth the sun damage. Otherwise, for stubborn tan residue, for example, just under armpits, bi carb soda is a great help! And it's not harmful to you at all. Lemon juice, vinegar, baby oil and even degreaser are also great if you just want to spot remove. Tan Removal Products You can also purchase tan removal products from supermarkets and pharmacies.
  • WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR SPRAY TAN, AM I GETTING NAKED & CAN I BRING SOMEONE WITH ME?
What to bring / how to arrive Remember to come looking makeup, moisturiser and deodorant free. And you can wear your dressing gown or come looking as homeless as you like as no one will see you. That's the beauty of a home salon. I will LOVE you for it and it will get you a great result. Of course if you have come from work I have makeup and body wipes for you to freshen up.....and then go home....braless of course (a no brainer for you guys of course). Cotton type, loose clothing, even a sarong or your dressing gown to wear after. Avoid satin or silk as these fabrics absorb moisture. If you come in your tight, white pants, I will send you home in a sarong. No-one is ruining my work! Am I getting naked? Totally. Zero tan lines look great, but it’s up to you. Always go with whatever makes you feel most comfortable. I do have clients who like to wear their watch because it makes the tan look natural. Wear a g-string or underwear if you prefer not to go naked. I no longer provide disposable g-strings because they don't give the best tan lines. In my opinion, naked is always best. As it is a private, home salon, no-one else will see you, although my dog does occasionally make a quick, guest appearance. Can I bring someone with me? Absolutely. There is a little waiting room that gives you privacy and whoever you bring can sit on the lounge. It is still part of the same room, but divided, although your guest will still hear chatter and me giving instructions. Just maybe don't give away any major secrets!
  • AT YOUR APPOINTMENT - YEP AFTER ALL THESE RULES, YOU FINALLY GET A TAN!
I will have a chat with you about what you are after in terms of colour. Everybody's skin reacts differently to spray tans and that's why I use a range of colours. I stock green, violet and brown based solutions to suit. You will definitely not look orange and be recruited as an Oompah-Loompah for the next Charlie and The Chocolate Factory movie, no matter how badly you want to meet Johnny Depp. Neither will you end up looking like Shrek if I go for a green base. Spray Tans take approximately 15 minutes but allow 25 minutes as I like to dry as I go.
  • POST SPRAY TAN TIPS AND WHAT TO AVOID
Spray Tans typically last anywhere from 7-10 days depending on factors such as skin type, lifestyle and most importantly, your post-tan care regime. We have to go 50/50 here as your preparation and my skills coincide! Spray solutions do contain a bronzer so after your initial post tan shower you will see the bronzer go down the drain. Don't panic! You will still develop. Don't use body wash or soap for your first shower. It is more of a rinse off. You may feel as though you are a little bit blotchy, that is just the remnants of the bronzer and by your second shower you will be in love. Well you better be, otherwise we can choose a different tan solution next time. Even though I mostly prefer the "Express" tans which you can wash off anywhere between 1 hour to 3 hours, depending on the colour you desire to be, the DHA still develops over about 8 hours and is usually even better the next day. BUT please listen when I say what time to wash it off, as overdeveloping can make your tan great, but only for a few days. The manufacturers recommend no high impact exercise for the first 16-24 hours as the DHA used in rapid solutions continues to develop after the initial wash off. But that is a bit of overkill if you ask me. A spray tan will make you look healthy, but I'm not going to ban you from exercise! I think cardiovascular health might just be that little bit more important! Avoid chlorinated/heated places such as pools, spas, saunas, steam rooms. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. I will brainwash you about it, even thought it something I even have to force myself to do. I just use Sorbolene. It is best to avoid baby oil, Bio-oil etc or anything invasive because it is actually good for taking your tan off. Not part of the plan for at least a week.
  • SPECIAL OCCASION TANS, BRIDAL, WEDDING & COMMITMENT CEREMONY TANS
SPECIAL OCCASION TANS, BRIDAL, WEDDING & COMMITMENT CEREMONY TANS Should I get a trial? Absolutely, you should get a trial, just like I hope you are also getting a hair and makeup trial. Take it from me, the last time I was bridesmaid, after the makeup artist had finished with me I wasn’t sure whether:- a) she also moonlighted as a mortuary cosmetologist, b) I was wearing this much makeup because I was filming a movie, or c) whether I should rob a bank, because I definitely did not look like me. In fact, I always suggest getting a few tans before your wedding, not just a trial tan because we want to perfect for the big occasion. I’m bossy as it is, but if you aren’t a Beachside Bombshell Tan regular I want to make sure we can adjust your preferences as needed. Experimenting with different depths, colour bases and shades in advance means we can work out exactly what you like and are going to feel like a BOMBSHELL on the day. Try and coincide your tans with times where you might have an event, makeup trial, or even things like the dress fitting. Obviously not the final one. We want to know our exact plan by then. But we also don’t want to waste a good tan. So even though you’ll always feel great with a fabulous tan, let’s not waste it if you are going to be mulching the garden all weekend or doing something like Tough Mudder!
  • HOW LONG WILL MY TAN LAST?
Typically 6-10 days depending on your skin, how well you prepared your skin, lifestyle and aftercare. 6-7+ is typically the result. Some clients even have theirs last 2 weeks! Preparation and aftercare is key. Did you know? - The life of your spray tan is mostly dependent on the you... Your spray tan artist can apply the most flawless tan ever, but if you don't take care of it correctly, it won't last. It is imperative you follow the before and after steps to maintain your spray tan. & that 100% involves moisturising. You don't need to use anything invasive, Sorbolene, QV, & Cetaphil would be my go to.
  • I’M PREGNANT, IT IS SAFE TO TAN?
Reach out to Victoria for any questions.
  • I’M BREASTFEEDING, IS IT SAFE TO TAN?
Please note, this is not medical advice and always check with your medical professional if you have any questions. Although there's currently no research to indicate that spray tanning while breastfeeding is going to do any harm to your baby, the immune system of newborns is significantly more susceptible to allergens than the average adult so it is optimal to choose an allergen-free, organic spray tan solution. At Beachside Bombshell Tans we only use solutions with no nasties in them regardless. If in doubt, always check with your medical professional.
  • EVERYTHING MAN TAN
Yes, everyone LOVES a tan! All of the above FAQ's, apart from pregnancy and breastfeeding apply to you too, but reach out if you have specific questions. Trust me, there is nothing weird about it!
